2020 LARB/UCSC Fellowship

2020 is the second year of a collaboration between UCSC and the Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB)!

The Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB) is pleased to partner with the UCSC Department of Anthropology, Division of Social Sciences and Grad Division to offer two full-tuition scholarships (plus an additional $1,000 living stipend) for UCSC graduate students to attend the 2020 LARB Publishing Workshop. One of these, the Margaret Mead Journalism Fellowship, will be specifically reserved for a graduate student in the UCSC Anthropology Department.

The Publishing Workshop is an intensive, three-week summer course on book, magazine, and online publishing held in Los Angeles from Sunday, July 5 – Friday, July 24, 2020. Through lectures, seminars, and practical instruction, Workshop Fellows learn the foundations of print and digital publishing from over 60+ leading industry professionals from Audible, Bloomsbury Academic, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, L.A. Times, Melville House, Oxford University Press, The Paris Review, Plympton, Penguin Random House, Slate, University of California Press, and many more. Fellows gain hands-on experience, as well, by assembling PubLab, the official publication of the LARB Publishing Workshop and a LARB channel. For those seeking to develop their own publishing ventures, a concurrent entrepreneurial track offers training on budgets, business plans, mission statements, and more.

Our goal is to build the future of publishing, student by student, idea by idea, innovation by innovation. We are thrilled to partner with our host Emerson College to bring the best of the publishing industry to the heart of Hollywood and Emerson’s beautiful Los Angeles campus. LARB is also proud to offer many full and partial tuition scholarships, making the program affordable for all qualified applicants. By increasing accessibility to people with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, we believe we can have a profound impact on the future of publishing—and thus a profound impact on our culture itself.

For UCSC/LARB scholarship consideration – eligibility for either the UCSC/LARB Fellowship or the Margaret Mead Journalism Fellowship, please apply by March 16. For a general application – without the chance for UCSC support – to the 2020 Publishing Workshop apply by March 30.
